The Bible is a story of journeys. Abraham left home to journey to the land that God would show him. The Hebrews, freed from slavery, left Egypt to journey to the promised land. And, the disciples left behind their families and their way of life to journey with Jesus.
The good news is that God walks with us wherever the journey of faith takes us., Just as the Risen Christ walked with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The Christian life is a journey, and Christ is our companion on the way and the Holy Spirit is our guide.
Every October we take a journey together with the aim of growing in our walk with Christ. This is a six year journey through of vows of church membership. The first year we reviewed our vow “to be loyal to the Elizabeth Lee UMC by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and witness”. Last year we specifically examined our prayers and this year we will examine our presence.
Usually we understand our commitment to presence in terms of worship, but this is only one facet of being present. By examining the five practices of a fruitful, Christian life, we will come to understand the other ways in which we can be fully present to Christ in our journey in faith and our walk together. These practices are: radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional faith development, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity.
Together we will be reading the devotional book “Forty Days of Fruitful Living” by Robert Schnase. Please pick up your book in the Welcome Center, the Well, or the church office. Begin reading on Sept. 20th.
On September 24th we will kickoff our Journey with ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 7pm. (No morning worship services that day due to Ironman.) We will have a hymn sing, special music, an introduction to the study, and an ice cream social to follow on the lawn.
Sunday School classes and Life Groups will begin the first week’s lesson on Oct. 1st. Additional small groups will be offered on Sunday morning in the Sanctuary at 10am and Wednesday morning at 11am in the Well.
See you Sunday, and be sure to pick up your book for the Journey!
