Growing up on a farm near Sweetwater, TN, Barbara’s life revolved around their small, rural church and its people. She knew she wanted to work full-time in a church, but thought that meant being a missionary in Africa.
Barbara graduated from Hiwassee College, Madisonville, TN, and Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, GA. She worked at Burk’s UMC’s Child Development Center for 9 years, then became Director of Christian Education at Hixson UMC for 11 years. For 18 years, she worked at First-Centenary UMC, downtown Chattanooga, in Children’s Ministry and as Church Administrator.
Retired after 38 years, Barbara feels God led her to Elizabeth Lee. She relishes supporting parents in the Christian education of their children and loves getting to know the children and their families. Barbara likes to say, “It’s ok to run in church,” meaning there is always a space where children can be children. Being a bit hyper herself, she gets it!
Barbara and Jerry recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their daughter, Beth Anne, is married to Gale Wagner. They have a 13-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter. Their second daughter, Bambi Alaine, is married to Mike Doss and they have a 5 year old daughter.
Barbara wants children’s classes and outings to be meaningful, safe, and always fun for children. Her desire is for children to fall in love, for life, with the church and its people. And God is smack-dab in the middle of all that love!
